Facebook begins censorship retaliation against Liberal bill
This substack will keep you up to date on my writing
A misguided Liberal government bill has left me unable to share my work on social media. Bill C-18 forces social media sites to pay a fee every time they direct a Canadian to a Canadian media article. Not surprisingly, Meta, the parent company of Facebook and Instagram doesn’t like that policy, so they have started blocking Canadian content—but only to Canadians. Those in other countries or those who use a virtual private network to obscure their location can still read the news as before.
Trudeau wins either way. The ban does nothing to stop mainstream media from getting its $595 million of government tax breaks or continuing on TV and radio stations and print newspapers. Whatever lost traffic they get from social media will only make them more reliant on tax dollars and more likely to not offend Trudeau. Independent media, such as the Western Standard, whom I write for, get a kick in the nuts, as no one can be directed to their articles from social media. Some still don’t know the publication even exists, and their chances of ever finding out just got worse.
Even if the ban had never happened, the Liberal government was still going to be the arbiters of who would received the raked-off fees. The Toronto Star and Globe and Mail would have been favorites and media unfriendly to Trudeau would have been lucky to get a single dollar.
It’s time to go out of your way to read what Meta and Trudeau don’t want you to see. I encourage everyone to take out a membership at Western Standard at $10 monthly (or $100 annually as a discount) and and make it your home page. The Epoch Times, which I also write for, is another good choice. The one month trial is only $1. Maybe the Meta ban will be off after that anyway, though I doubt it. I also write for the think tank Frontier Centre for Public Policy, and the link to donate is here.
These organizations are giving air to some fires that need to burn. The times are darker than the undiscerning realize.
With that, my 30 articles written since my previous Substack post July 6.
