The boxer who beat the Banjo Bowl creator
Mark Newton won a 4-round match against Blue Bomber Troy Westwood months after he called Saskatchewan Roughrider fans "banjo-picking inbreds." It was early in his journey from jailbird to role model.
Hi! At a fireside gathering in White City I had a chat with someone with an interesting history—Mark Newton. He grew up near the Stony Mountain Penitentiary and the Headingley Penitentiary in the town of Stony Mountain. He ended up taking short stints in both facilities before he gave his life to the Lord. His mixture of mouthy showmanship, feistiness, and inexperience made him the perfect match for Troy Westwood, the Winnipeg Blue Bomber kicker who called us ‘Rider fans “banjo-picking inbreds.” About 1,500 fans witnessed the bout, which was a professional debut for each (Newton went under the pseudonym ‘Matthias Hughes’). Today Newton runs his own moving company in Regina and mixes boxing and the Bible in a weekly activity for the interested.
